I’ve been cycling my entire life. Get yourself a really good bicycle and get fit. You’re going to need it, fatso. Yes, you!

Get the "Hat" and you’re halfway there… honestly, I’d like to get one of those hats just for the vibe and also for the good sunblock coverage… much respect to the Amish and simpler living.

I greatly respect the Amish, for almost all of their values. I do, however, differ on self-defense.

  15. Linda Marquis on February 26, 2021 at 10:24 pm

The Amish are made up of big families, that means a group of Amish are aunts ,uncles and sisters and brothers. It is not like most of us going together to church and work. That is why it is so hard if one of them wants to marry outside their group or wants a car, they are shunned . When shunned no one will talk to you for fear that they will also be shunned. I respect the the Amish and like their love of family, but I think it unnecessary to live as they do, without modern technology.

  16. Paul Smith on February 26, 2021 at 10:24 pm

The Amish are heathens. I’m Smomish, and we don’t even believe in using wagons because wheels are the devils work.

The Amish are two-faced. They will be quick to use your high tech items but they won’t own them because it’s against their religion. Give me a break.

  19. Old Goat on February 26, 2021 at 10:29 pm

An Amish problem nobody discusses is all the blood disorders from inbreeding.

I think when the time comes they will defend what they hold dear – their beliefs-family- and country .

Many antique stores have the old tools but find them is the hard part.
My family has been living in AMISH Ohio since 1798 …I’ve learned much from my great uncles and aunties, cousins.
They asked my if I want to come home as away from the “English “. Living off the grid for many years is healthy and happier. No tv, no cell phones and no electricity, high use of propane and wood, solar, batteries, making your own clothes.
Greatest of all is family and Gods words is top priority daily.

They still need to pay their taxes. They are not above the law. If they can go to jail when they commit a crime, they need to pay taxes too.

  27. Nick Rudd on February 26, 2021 at 10:40 pm

Getting away from the modern world thats clearly going so wrong. Im all up for learning a real trade, Wood working is a brilliant trade. Farming is a needed trade.

Affording the horse and buggy is a lot more doable when you don’t have cable, cell phone, or utility payments emptying your wallet. Most Amish also shoe their own horses, float their teeth, and pay for shots. If you think about it, that horse and buggy ends up costing far less each month than all the electric devices and bills. Heating with only wood, not ever running AC, and putting up the food from gardens and orchards also means that a lot of money is not being spent. Having ~ on average ~ two years worth of food in jars and root cellars is security. Not even noticing when the power is off is also security. The one real difference is that they all take care of each other and their elderly. In our ‘English’ society, our old and sick get left by the roadside or dumped in a home for a long list of excuses. What that means is their elderly live out their lives surrounded by care and love, they don’t go hungry or shiver because they can’t pay a bill or haul in wood for the fire any more. There are core values within the community that provide for things the rest of the world never experience.

I like the Amish. Good manners are instilled early. Simple faith in God. Practice what they preach.

Those buggies are very expensive, although they are low tech. Their land is some of the richest land in the US. They have a saying that "if God closes one door, he will open another."

  45. Maggie Patterson on February 26, 2021 at 11:01 pm

What is SHTF? This is all well and good BUT being retired, small woman, mid 70’s, this is NOT PRACTICAL for me, nor for a lot of others. How in the world am I to get a wood stove, where to put it, how to get wood..and most of all..HOW TO PAY.? Sounds good, but is not realistic. Maybe those who live in rural areas MIGHT be able to re-furnish with wood stoves, start gardening, sewing quilting, lighting with kerosene, ( And where, how do i get a storage tank?, buying a generator, starting it? so on and on. And for families with kids in school….these are not do-able either. IMO

  46. SONDRA C on February 26, 2021 at 11:02 pm

It was good up to the rambling at the end. I disagree. It has been proven over and over again that diverse teams are more effective . If you have one, not very diverse group, they have problems seeing problems in different ways. Yes, there is a very good chance that there will be less conflict, but I personally, I think conflict is healthy in teams. It makes participants in a team defend their points of view rather than retreating to the old standby "Well, it’s just common sense".
