Beauty Secrets Barbie by Mattel (Commercial, 1980)

Here’s a commercial for Beauty Secrets Barbie by Mattel. This was from the period when the basic jingle for Barbie doll products (as on here) was a reworking of the title song from the 1966 movie “Georgy Girl.”

“Comes with a beauty kit – Sport ‘n’ Shape Ken doll sold separately.”

This aired on local Chicago TV on Friday, September 5th 1980.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television’s primary mission is the
preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s
and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels;
footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved
digitally.  Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we
preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives – the complete programs
with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical
purposes.  For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or
lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 3,700+ (and
counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please

    I remember that Sport N Shave Ken- he was the only one who had real hair, instead of plastic.

    This version had the really white hair that was so delicate! If you brushed it, it would get frizzy and your barbie ended up with a long cottonball, for hair on her head!
    I don’t know why Mattel used that awful quality of light hair on some of their dolls from the mid-70’s to early 80’s dolls!?
